Global Granular Urea Stages Sharp Rally Across North Africa, Mideast, Latin America & US Nola
A Most Unusual July

July is typically regarded as the seasonal low point for urea prices, and many market participants had expected a similar pattern this year. Instead, the market has rallied sharply, with North African granular urea prices pushing as high as $535/t fob.

In the Middle East, granular urea was assessed higher at $395-435/t fob framed by at least three deals throughout the week. Iranian urea changed hands at $350/t fob, although ongoing uncertainty over vessel transit through the Strait of Hormuz continued to cloud export logistics and keep producers cautious on forward commitments.

Buyers in Brazil are slowly accepting higher levels, with the highest confirmed business reported at $430-440/t cfr. In Argentina, deals were concluded at up to $465/t cfr early in the week.

The Nola urea price moved higher supported by rising international values and what is gearing up to be a record summer for vessel exports from the US. But several traders have expressed skepticism of rising prices at Nola given the US is in the middle of its summer lull, one of the slowest periods of the fertilizer year.
